Review: The Ferryman by Justin Cronin, performed by Scott Brick and Suzanne Elise Freeman
The Ferryman is a unique, gripping, powerful, visceral, entertaining, unputdownable, and original work of literature from Justin Cronin, the award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of The Passage, The Twelve, The City of Mirrors, The Summer Guest, and last but not least, the excellent Mary and O’Neil. I can say without a doubt that Justin Cronin is one of my favorite authors of all time, up there with Stephen King and Don Winslow.
I absolutely love his flawless writing, strange, dark, imaginative, and atmospheric stories featuring vividly detailed worlds and their lifelike characters.
The Ferryman is a wondrous joy to listen to as it is beautifully performed by husband and wife actors, Scott Brick and Suzanne Elise Freeman, themselves award-winning narrators and some of the best in their craft. As the story is told from multiple points of view, involving two excellent voiceover artists makes a lot of sense.
Although it’s a standalone novel, The Ferryman manages to capture the listener’s attention and imagination with its riveting and fascinating story about a group of survivors on a hidden island utopia where nothing is what it seems at first glimpse.
Immersive from the first minute to its last, I started my adventure with The Ferryman at 9 AM, immediately after becoming available on Audible and I spent 20 of the last 27 hours listening with wrapped attention and immersed in this deeply satisfying and truly awesome work of fiction.
The Ferryman delights and entertains tremendously, especially constant readers of Mr. Cronin’s like myself, but I’m sure that it will gather a following of new fans also. I don’t want to tell you anything else about the story because I don’t want to spoil any part of it for you, but I highly recommend that you give it a try. From such a talented author we can only expect stories that will stay with us forever and The Ferryman is no different.
If you are a Justin Cronin fan I guess that you had The Ferryman pre-ordered like me and have already finished with it, but for anyone else, this should also be an instant buy, because it is a literary masterpiece that you will never forget!
Now it’s time for me to return to our normal, regular world and phase its challenges, or I could just start listening again to The Passage Trilogy.
