Linger 2: Trail of the Beast by Edaward Fallon, read by Susanna Burney
Not too long ago, I was very excited to discover the Linger series by Edward Fallon. After I wrote my review for Dying is a Wild Night, I found myself thinking about the characters and were that Paranormal Thriller could go, the possibilities being practically endless and the premise so enthralling. So, although I had a lot on my plate, I started listening to Linger 2: Trail of the Beast.
Linger 2: Trail of the Beast, being the second book in this series, picks up the story exactly where Dying is a Wild Night left it. Kate Messenger leaves her life as a Police Detective with the Violent Crimes Unit, following Noah and the blind boy, Christopher, hoping to put an end to the gruesome murders committed all over the United States by the serial killer they’ve dubbed The Beast.
The action of the Trail of the Beast takes place in a small town named Singer, after our three protagonists encounter some difficulties with Noah’s old 1960’s Dodge Rambler, they are forced to spend a few days, until the needed car parts arrive and are installed. Christopher feels there is something very wrong in Singer and the trio begin investigating the nearby woods and river, and they stumble upon a different kind of Beast.
I am relatively vague because, as you well know, I hate spoilers and I aim not to give up an excellent plot in my reviews. I have to admit that when I learned that the Linger series was written by multiple authors, I was a little skeptic, but, after my experience with two of the five books, my skepticism is dead and buried.
Linger 2: Trail of the Beast can be experienced as a stand alone mystery or as a continuation for Dying is a Wild Night. I suggest you read the first book as well because there are some really interesting details in that one which will help you understand and appreciate the characters arc and the brilliant story. In this second book, the relationship between Kate Messenger, Noah Weston and Christopher solidifies and they even interact and help some very well written residents of Singer.
The book is brilliantly written, very fast paced, dark, atmospheric and full of tension. Just like I did with Dying is a Wild Night, I couldn’t stop listening, until it ended, breathlessly wanting to uncover the mysteries surrounding the out of the way town, situated literally, in the middle of nowhere . I found myself caring even for some secondary characters, not only for Kate, Weston and Christopher.
I can’t wait to start Linger 3: Reckoning for the Damned, hopefully tonight, and I hope to write a review for that book next weekend. The Linger series is shaping up to become one of my favorite Paranormal Thrillers ever!
Susanna Burnie returns to narrate Linger 2: Trail of the Beast and she does, again, an excellent job with her great performance. She gives life to our beloved Kate, Christopher and Noah, she switches accents on the fly when needed and she accentuates the palpable tension even more.
I was really glad to see that Susanna is the narrator for the entire Linger saga, because as I always said: ” changing the narrator of an audiobook series is like changing the main actor for a movie”.
Get Linger 2: Trail of the Beast and you’ll be hooked from the first sentence! Prepair for a Paranormal Thriller Mystery that will linger on your mind long after the last words fade away.
Note: Edward Fallon is an author identity created by Robert Gregory Browne. All the books in the Linger seriesare written by different authors using the Edward Fallon alias. Linger 2: Trail of the Beast is written by J.D Rhoades.

Publisher’s Summary
Every crime scene has a smell. A look. A trail of DNA. It also has a feel. An emotional residue that lingers…floating unseen, like bacteria in the air, just waiting to be absorbed. To be experienced. To be interpreted.
And only the man, the woman, and the boy know this.
When Kate Messenger quits her job as a police detective to join Noah Weston and Christopher on the road in the middle of nowhere, she has no idea what to expect.
Has she made a mistake? Should she have stayed in California?
After Weston’s beloved Rambler breaks down, the three find themselves stranded in a small Alabama town where the beast has clearly left his mark on one of the local residents.
Before long, Kate and Weston realize that not only does the town’s dark river harbor a beast of its own – a beast that hungers for young Christopher – but their quarry may be nearby, watching their every move….
