Review: Hell Divers by Nicholas Sansbury Smith, performed by R.C. Bray
Hell Divers is the fantastic first book in the series with the same name of post-apocalyptic novels from best-selling and award-winning author Nicholas Sansbury Smith!
Yes, I know that this is a 2016 Editor’s Pick, 2016 Audible’s Best in Science Fiction, a New York Times and USA Today best-selling series with nine books available at this moment and the 10th to be released in the near future, but it took me almost 7 years to dive into this unforgettable science-fiction universe.
The brilliant mind behind other blockbusters such as E-Day The Extinction Cycle, Orbs, and the excellent Sons of War saga never ceases to delight and entertain us with terrifying stories of the impending apocalypse that is sure to befall humanity.
It seems that more than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. But in order to stay afloat, the lives of the last survivors are in the hands of Hell Divers, brave men and women who risk everything by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.
But when they are forced to dive into the most dangerous zone, things are taking a turn for the worse.
Beautiful and sharp writing, a vividly described world, insane action, remarkable characters, and a breakneck pace kept me up long into the night and forced me to listen to this superb audiobook in just one sitting. So 10 hours in one day, yes, this is how good it is.
Legendary and award-winning audiobook narrator R.C. Bray brings the characters, the post-apocalyptic world, the locations, and the events to life in another outstanding performance. His narration skills are the stuff of legend, he reads, he acts, he infuses the action with urgency and emotion, ceaselessly pushing the story forward and entertaining endlessly in this process.
After finishing the E-Day trilogy last month, I find that Hell Divers is a wonderfully dark, gripping, viscerally atmospheric, and bloody violent post-apocalyptic narrative experience that should be witnessed by readers all over the world who are fascinated by this genre.
I said it before and I say it one more time, Nicholas Sansbury Smith is one of the most talented and prolific writers of his generation! Although I am late to the Hell Divers party, I’m sure that I will catch up with the story in the next month, and soon I will be eagerly awaiting the release of Hell Divers 10 as much as everyone else.
Until then, please make yourself a favor and pick up this book and any other written by Nicholas Sansbury Smith and narrated by the amazing R.C. Bray, you’ll thank me for the recommendation.
