Review: Kamikaze Lust by Lauren Sanders, performed by Helen Laser

Kamikaze Lust is a daring and captivating novel by award-winning author Lauren Sanders, and this is the 25th anniversary version of a story that feels raw, direct, and authentic.
We follow Rachel Slivowitz, a young journalist navigating her place in the world while grappling with work, relationships, family expectations, and her own identity. The narrative is infused with humor, but also profound introspection, and it doesn’t shy away from delving into uncomfortable territory.
Although this isn’t typically my preferred genre, I can certainly understand its appeal to many. Even better, the audiobook version is brought to life by one of the best narrators in the industry. The performance by Helen Laser is flawless, immersive, and thoroughly entertaining. She delivers the story with a calm confidence that perfectly embodies Rachel. Her voice feels natural and conversational, which is crucial for a book like this, as it is largely driven by personality and inner musings.
Helen also adeptly transitions between characters’ voices, maintaining a smooth pace from start to finish.
For those of you who don’t know, Helen Laser is a seasoned narrator, and that is reflected in her performance. She has lent her voice to well-known audiobooks, including Yellowface, and her work here is more than enough reason to pick up this audiobook.
Kamikaze Lust is a compelling listen, particularly if you appreciate character-driven stories that are honest and a bit unpredictable. With narration this exceptional, the audiobook format is undoubtedly the best way to experience it.
If you are a fan of the genre and haven’t picked up this audiobook until now, the 25th anniversary combined with a stellar narration should give you the urge to press that purchase button. Kamikaze Lust is available at audible, apple, spotify, audiobooks.com, or wherever you get your audiobooks.
