Review: Linger 5: The Death of Dreams by Edward Fallon

Linger 5: The Death of Dreams
is the latest entry into this series of thrilling paranormal mysteries written by Edward Fallon and performed by Susanna Burney. The book is dark and full of terrors, no really! It will scare you half to death, it will make you cringe in horror and you’ll feel queasy for the most part of the story.

The Death of Dreams reintroduces the readers to the three main characters of the series, the woman, the man and the boy, that they’ve followed since Linger: Dying is a Wild Night. After their adventures around the country, following the serial murderer they’ve dubbed The Beast, ex-homicide Detective Kate Messenger, Noah Weston and the young blind and mute kid with paranormal powers, Christopher, find themselves  pulled by an unknown power to a small rural town in Michigan, in the middle of Winter, abandoning, for the time being, the trail of the Beast.

They decide to enter the local diner to eat and doing so they put  in motion a series of events that will shake each and everyone of them to his core.

An old house in the middle of nowhere, that’s killing everyone trying to unravel its secrets… Paranormal activities…. A blinding snowstorm… A dark and freezing night in that house of terrors…  And someone or something that’s taking everything that our heroes love and turns it against them. Every dream becomes a nightmare!

This 5th book is different, it’s much darker, scarier, creepier and gorier than any of the other four novels that came before it. The author paints a nightmarish story for Kate, Noah and Chris, developing their characters further and forcing them to face a foe much powerful than The Beast. Be warned, although you’ll be horrified by what happening in the book, you’ll not be able to stop listening / reading until the satisfying conclusion.

Fast paced and unputdownable like all the other books in the Linger series, The Death of Dreams can be experienced as a standalone or as a continuation for this trio’s adventures. As I understand it, there are at least two more novels to be released in the near future, that will put our heroes back where they belong, chasing The Beast.

For me, some of the events portrayed in Linger 5: The Death of Dreams were a little disturbing and some back and forwards between the characters seemed forced, cliched and unnecessary, but that’s just me, and that’s drama for you. As a whole, the book its well written, tackling some really interesting and original ideas and delivers non stop and terrifying action from the moment Kate puts foot in that damned house until she gets out.

Experienced female actor and narrator Susanna Burney returns once more to perform and to give life to this noir  story. She has narrated the Linger Series from its inception and now, after five books in, she handles all the characters with talent and passion. Kate Messenger is bold and sure of her abilities, Noah Weston suffers a lot and Chris is testing his limits. You can feel all of this and much more from Susanna’s delivery. I think she loves this series and I’m really looking forward to Linger 6.  The audiobook version is 5 hours and 25 minutes, just like the others before it.

Note: Edward Fallon is an author identity created by Robert Gregory Browne. All the books in the Linger seriesare written by different authors using the Edward Fallon alias. Linger 5: The Death of Dreams is written by Rob Cornell

Publisher’s Summary

They see what no one else sees…

Every crime scene has a smell, a look, a trail of DNA. It also has a feel. An emotional residue that lingers…floating unseen, like bacteria in the air, just waiting to be absorbed, to be experienced, to be interpreted.

And only the man, the woman, and the boy know this.

It starts with a “pull” they can’t quite explain. All three of them feel it – Kate, Weston, and Christopher – but none of them know why they are drawn to this small town in Southeast Michigan in the middle of winter.

Before long, they are confronted in a diner by an oddly formal man with a cemented smile who warns them away, because he knows, you see. He knows why they have come here. And in the next few hours, Kate, Weston, and Christopher will know, too, as they find themselves trapped in a house in the midst of a raging snow storm – a house that has seen its share of horrific violence…and is about to see more.
