Review: Nightshade, Catalina Series, Book 1, by Michael Connelly, performed by Will Damron

Although I listened to Nightshade shortly after its release, I only recently found the time to properly write down my thoughts about it. After now finishing both books currently available in the Catalina series, I can say that Michael Connelly has created another fantastic addition to his already impressive crime fiction universe.
Nightshade introduces Detective Stilwell, a former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detective who has been reassigned to Catalina Island following conflicts within the department. Far from being the quiet and uneventful assignment it first appears to be, Stilwell soon finds himself investigating the death of a woman discovered in the harbor, uncovering corruption, hidden relationships, and dangerous secrets buried beneath the island’s calm exterior.
Connelly once again proves why he remains one of the strongest writers in the genre, delivering a grounded and tightly written investigation filled with believable characters, sharp dialogue, and a steady sense of tension throughout. Catalina Island also gives the series a very different atmosphere compared to the Bosch or Lincoln Lawyer novels, while still feeling naturally connected to the larger Connelly universe.
The audiobook version is brought to life by Will Damron, whose narration fits Detective Stilwell perfectly. He delivers a relaxed but engaging performance, capturing both the quieter character moments and the more suspenseful scenes with ease. His narration feels smooth, natural, and highly polished from beginning to end, making this an extremely entertaining and enjoyable audiobook to listen to.
Michael Connelly has also confirmed on social media that HBO has picked up the rights for a television adaptation of Nightshade, with the project being developed by David E. Kelley and the same creative team behind Netflix’s excellent adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer.
Nightshade is a fantastic start to a brand-new Michael Connelly series and an easy recommendation for fans of Harry Bosch, Mickey Haller, and intelligent, grounded crime fiction.
