Review: The Girl: Guardians, book 1 by Lola StVil, read by V.A
“The Girl”, has a very interesting take on the angel world. The angels are categorized: from Paras which stay the closest to Omnis (God) and their name means paradise. They are very neutral angles and think as one. Then you have Travelers who go back and forth between the world and the light. Their job is to update the council (made of Death, Time, and Fate) in addition to Omnis of the human world along with what the Guardians are doing. Guardians, which are the main characters, are angels that died in their teenage years usually in some tragic way. There is an agreement between Lucy (Devil) and Omnis that because teenagers haven’t truly chosen the light or dark they are put on a bridge with the light on one side and darkness on the other. Both the light and dark have picked Guardians or Akons (for dark) to make sure neither side gets involved. These humans turned angels are either the darkest or the lightest on the bridge.
Marcus is the first Guardian making him the leader of the team. The team consists of Marcus, Mimi, Reese, Jay and the twins Reo and Miku. Every 666 years they are allowed to come to earth to find what is called the triplex with very little clues. The Akons can also find it and are given the same information. One of the clues Is a young girl named Emmy Baxtor. She becomes a pivotal character and part of the team although she is a human. Her selfless, courageous and strong attributes starts to affect Marcus to the point they fall in love…but the Sage has advised Marcus that she will cause the mission to fail.
As the story progresses there is torture, death, betrayal, wonderfully described battles with unique weapons, Akon and Angelic powers that have to do with each angels “core” ( what they asked for Omnis as they died). There is even a point that is tear worthy.
The Narrators, Jennifer O’Donnell and Adam Chase did a wonderful job at bringing the characters to life with diversity and emotion. Jennifer also does the spin off called “The Noru” which I listened too and she is truly a gifted narrator!
