Mystery novel Tokyo Traffic by award-winning author Michael Pronko, available now as audiobook narrated by Peter Berkrot
Hello again, dear audiobooks friends! I am really excited about today’s New Release article, as I’ve been waiting for this audiobook to be available for what it seems to be a long, long time. Tokyo Traffic is the third novel in the award-winning Detective Hiroshi Series of mysteries by Michael Pronko set in the exotic metropolis of Tokyo, Japan.
As you may remember, if you follow my articles here, I am a huge fan of Michael’s and I am always eagerly awaiting new installments. The change from the other two audiobooks comes from the fact that for Tokyo Traffic we have a brand new voice. I’m really glad that multiple award-winning narrator and actor Peter Berkrot has stepped into Detective Hiroshi’s shoes for this adventure and hopefully, for many more to come.
The audio production is over 10 hours in duration and I suggest that you clear your calendar because once you start, you will not be able to press pause. That’s exactly what happened to me. I started listening late at night, couldn’t fall asleep, had to stop, and continued listening from 5 a.m. until brunch.
Let’s take a look at the Publisher’s Summary and, after that, I will tell you a few things about our talented author and narrator:
Running from a life she didn’t choose, in a city she doesn’t know, Sukanya, a young Thai girl, loses herself in the vastness of Tokyo. With her Bangkok street smarts and some stolen money, she stays ahead of her former captors who will do anything to recover the computer she took. After befriending Chiho, a Japanese girl living in an internet café, Sukanya makes plans to rid herself of her pursuers, and her past, forever.
Meanwhile, Detective Hiroshi Shimizu leaves the safe confines of his office to investigate a porn studio where a brutal triple murder took place. The studio’s accounts point him in multiple directions at once. Together with ex-sumo wrestler Sakaguchi and old-school Takamatsu, Hiroshi tracks the killers through Tokyo’s music clubs and teen hangouts, bayside docks and byways, straight into the underbelly of the global economy.
As bodies wash up from Tokyo Bay, Hiroshi tries to find the Thai girl at the center of it all, whose name he doesn’t even know. He uncovers a human trafficking ring and cryptocurrency scammers whose connections extend to the highest levels of Tokyo’s power elite.

Michael Pronko is a Tokyo-based writer of murder, memoir and music. His writing about Tokyo life and taut character-driven mysteries have won awards and five-star reviews. Kirkus Reviews selected his second novel, The Moving Blade for their Best Books of 2018. The Last Train won the Shelf Unbound Competition for Best Independently Published Book.
Michael runs the website, Jazz in Japan, which covers the vibrant jazz scene in Tokyo and Yokohama. During his 20 years in Japan, he has written about Japanese culture, art, society and politics for Newsweek Japan, The Japan Times, and Artscape Japan. He has read his essays on NHK TV and done programs for Nippon Television based on his writings.
A philosophy major, Michael traveled for years, ducking in and out of graduate schools, before finishing his PhD on Charles Dickens and film, and finally settling in Tokyo as a professor of American Literature at Meiji Gakuin University. A veteran of stage and screen, Peter Berkrot‘s career spans four decades. Highlights include feature roles in Caddyshack and Showtime’s Brotherhood, and appearances on America’s Most Wanted and Unsolved Mysteries. His voice can be heard on television, radio, video games, documentaries and industrials. He is a prominent acting coach and a regular contributor to the award-winning news program Frontline produced by WGBH in Boston.
Peter served as director of narration for the Emmy-nominated The Truth About Cancer. He has also voiced almost 500 audiobooks and more than 300 for children, winning 10 Earphones Awards and a 2012 Audie Award nomination. He received SOVAS awards in 2018 and 2019. His 2016 Audie Award was as part of a multi cast performance for THE STARLING PROJECT, starring Alfred Molina and was part of the ensemble in the Audible Original THE X-FILES: COLD CASES starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
He was just honored along with a brilliant cast of actors for THE VAULT OF HORROR, directed by William Dufris with an Independent Audiobook Award for AUDIO DRAMA.
