Flash by Tim Tigner, Read by Dick Hill
A few weeks ago I’ve written a review for Betrayal, my first Tim Tigner book, and at that point I said that I’ll try more of his works because I enjoyed that Thriller so much, and that’s exactly what I did in the last 3 days.
Just two of Mr. Tigner’s Thrillers are available right now in audiobook format, both performed by the great Dick Hill, and the great news is that more will be released in the upcoming months. So, with Betrayal already listened to and reviewed, I’ve set my sights on Flash.
Flash has one of the most memorable opening scenes ever, reminiscent of the cult-classic The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum, but with enough originality to be considered unique and very entertaining.
Two complete strangers, Troy, a former combat surgeon and Emmy, short for Emerald, find themselves locked in the trunk of a car, splattered with blood, sharing the small space with a dead body, without any clue of how they ended up in there. More then that, neither knows who the other one is and to make a bad situation even worse, the girl points a gun at Troy and starts asking questions.
This entire scene is smartly written, peppered with paranoia, uncertainty, hilarious thoughts and the musings of both characters involved in it. Troy and Emmy face a conundrum and they’ll have to stick together to find a solution for their collective problem. Oh and, guess what? Both have lost around 6 years from their lives, Troy thinks the year is 2001 and that he is in Afghanistan and Emerald believes she is still in Los Angeles in 2002, but, no, they are both wrong! It’s 2008, they are in the Cayman Islands, the dead guy in the car’s trunk is a Cop and the garage where the drama took place is the Police’s parking lot.
Troy and Emmy will combine their wits and will start to uncover a huge conspiracy that reaches well beyond the two of them and at the same time will try to piece together enough facts to unravel the mystery surrounding their amnesia. They will encounter some really bad characters that will show them that the saying ”The road to Hell is paved with good intentions” is definitely true.
You all know that I hate spoilers, so this is all I will say about the plot, if you want to know more, just read the book!
Flash is a great book, full of dark humor, non stop action, vivid characters, exotic locations, interesting scientific facts, all of them rapped together by an original plot. The adventure moves along at breakneck speeds between The Cayman Islands and other locations. Tim Tigner describes so well everything, that you will be able to see every character, every location and every action packed scene in your mind’s eye.
I can’t wait to get my hands on Chasing Ivan, which I understand that will be the next book of Mr. Tigner’s releasing in audiobook format.
Now, let’s get to the narration part :).
Well, I think that from now on I could just write for every audiobook performed by Mr. Hill: Dick Hill is a great narrator, one of the best in the Audiobook Industry and he did a fantastic job with this book! But, no, he really deserves more!
Tim Tigner created a compelling story, filled with rich characters and Dick Hill brings it all to life! As usually, he gives special, distinct and easily recognizable voices to each of the main protagonists, using the full range of accents and intonations he mastered over the years. He is harsh or cruel when needed and he can make you laugh out loud with a funny Rastafarian accent. He can be a Cop, a woman, a lawyer or a drug dealer, switching between all of them with ease. Dick performs his roles with passion and makes you imagine every tiny detail like you were there.
I am really grateful that he is recording more audiobooks, with him semi-retired since 2014. I’m sure Tim Tigner, Andrew Peterson, Lee Child and a select group of authors appreciate his continuous work keeping their amazing characters alive.
Personally, I consider that Flash is better experienced as an audiobook because of Dick’s stellar performance!
