Review: Linger 4: Here There Be Monsters by Edward Fallon
Here we are again, with another review for the 4th book in the Linger series, named Linger 4: Here There Be Monsters written by Edward Fallon.
The book continues the story of ex-Homicide Detective Kate Messenger and her two companions, Noah Weston and Chris, the blind kid with paranormal powers as they follow The Beast, a sadistic, serial murderer that mutilates his victims in a specific way. This horrible criminal links the three of them together in pain and unimaginable loss. After the events in Linger 3: Reckoning for the Damned we see our protagonists as they travel to Austin, Texas.
In this new adventure Kate decides to take a few days off from chasing The Beast, to rest, and at the same time to prepare for the upcoming events. She uses her contacts in the police community to speed up the release of a private investigator license and a concealed gun permit. As they cruise the outskirts of Austin, they pass by an amusement park, but Christopher feels something very wrong, starts screaming ”Monsters, Monsters” and Kate decides to investigate the area.
As always, I try to avoid spoilers as much as possible, so I’ll be vague regarding the plot…The story revolves around the Texas Killing Fields, where lots of bodies were found continuously since the early 1970’s. Kate’s investigation will bring her to the above mentioned amusement park, but nothing is what it seems and she’ll have to fight for her life in a nightmarish setting.
Since I’ve written my reviews as I’ve gone through the series, it was a very nice surprise for me to realize that Linger 4: Here There Be Monsters is the best one yet. The story is very well written, surrounded by mystery and filled to bursting with tension, never slowing down, never losing momentum. There are a few secondary characters that I’ve enjoyed and the entire idea with the Texas Killing Fields is very interesting and entertaining. Yes, I know it’s real.
Not too many books can scare me, but this one did at some points. That’s part attributed to the author’s writing and part the benefit of having such a great narrator as Susanna Burney performing this entire series. As always, she did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life, being funny or terrifying, as the actions in the book dictated. More, she goes to the trouble to add audio effects to Christopher’s telepathic voice / thoughts, as he can’t talk, At some point, that thing, the rushed and terrified voice of a young boy, with the special effects scared me half to death.
I am looking forward to Linger 5: The Death of Dreams and I’ll bring you a review for it the in the coming weeks, but let’s end with three words for Linger 4: Thrilling, Gripping, Terrifying
Note: Edward Fallon is an author identity created by Robert Gregory Browne. All the books in the Linger seriesare written by different authors using the Edward Fallon alias. Linger 4: Here There Be Monsters is written by Will Graham.

Since the 1970s, countless bodies have been discovered in the desolate landscape, and Kate, Weston, and Christopher are about to find out why.
After three fruitless days following a lead to the Beast in Texarkana, Texas, Kate decides to use a much needed break to pursue a gun and PI license in Austin.
