Review: My Friends by Fredrik Backman, performed by Marin Ireland – Editor’s Choice Award for Excellence in Entertainment

A few years ago, a treasured friend recommended Fredrik Backman to me, and since that moment, I’ve been completely captivated by his storytelling. Each book has meant something deeply personal. But My Friends is literary perfection and the one that resonated the most with me! This one is on a whole different level. It’s Backman at his most profound, most precise, and most emotionally resonant.
There is not a word wasted here. Every sentence carries weight, humor, heartbreak, and truth. The way he writes about human connection, about the invisible threads that bind us, is something unique and that I’ve come to treasure, but in My Friends, he surpasses himself.
I laughed. I cried. And then I laughed again. And when the final lines came, I wasn’t ready to let go of these life-like characters. This audiobook stayed with me long after I’d taken off my AirPods, like a comforting hand gently and reassuringly resting on my shoulder.
Marin Ireland is one of the best narrators in the audiobook industry, and she delivers an unforgettable performance. She becomes the heart and soul of the story, bringing its quiet power to life with empathy, warmth, and a perfectly timed performance. Her narration adds another layer to the experience, never overpowering the words, only deepening their meaning.
My Friends isn’t just a great audiobook. It’s something everyone should experience. If you’ve never read Fredrik Backman before, this is the one to start with. And if you’re already a fan like me, this may be the one that stays with you the longest.
I am not a critic because a critic is hated by everyone, but I am, in my mind, someone who loves to spread the news about awesome audiobooks. This one is one of them, and there’s no doubt about that, exactly like there is no doubt that Mr. Backman is one of the best contemporary authors out there. If there is only one audiobook you listen to this year, make it this one.
For flawless writing and perfect narration, My Friends gets my highest praise: the Editor’s Choice Award for Excellence in Entertainment. This award celebrates the exceptional cooperation between author and narrator, which always elevates the narrative experience to the highest level of immersion and entertainment as humanly possible and it is given to both of them together.
Congratulations and thank you for the entertainment!
