New short stories collection, Songs of a Befuddled Muse by William Cohen-Kiraly, available now in audiobook format, narrated by Liz May Brice
Hello again, dear audiobooks friends. Today’s spotlight article is dedicated to Songs of a Befuddled Muse, a new short stories collection by journalist, photographer, programmer and writer William Cohen-Kiraly. Available now as an audiobook, it’s comprised of Thirteen Tales of Divergent Inspiration narrated by English actress Liz May Brice, with a total runtime of almost 9 hours.
Before posting this spotlight article I listened to the first story and I can confirm that I enjoy both the writing and the narration. The same first story is available for free download as PDF here:
I’m looking forward to checking out the rest before writing a full review for the collection. Now it’s time to take a look at the Publisher’s Summary and after that I will tell you more about the author and the narrator.
The Mind of a Befuddled Muse is a maze of odd nooks and crannies where unusual ideas can flower in surprising ways.
This collection of short fiction by William Cohen-Kiraly contains 13 stories across genres, including science fiction, time travel, ghost and paranormal tales, and clown noir.
Stories in this collection include:
- Times of Life and Death: A field historian specializing in Tudor history goes back in time to witness history in first person, but becomes obsessed with the enchanting but doomed Lady Jane Grey.
- Curved Space: The captain of a dying interstellar ship facetiously asks Earth to send pizzas, and he is shocked when a delivery shows up at his airlock.
- Hearts Desire: The newly elected president of the United States wins a bet with the devil. She finds he can cause even more pain when he grants her wishes.
- The Big Gumshoes: A clown PI must investigate the murder of his friend and mentor. Along the way, he finds love, battles a corrupt side show, and solves the mystery of the dog left at his trailer door.
- Something That Will Not Let Go: A woman, whose life has been shattered, returns to her childhood home. She finds that the imaginary friend who helped her survive abuse is still waiting for her, and willing to help her exact revenge.
William Cohen-Kiraly has been writing for as long as he can remember. As a child, he was a voracious reader of both fiction and non-fiction. He immersed himself in various genres, including science books, fiction, newspapers, and even the Breakfast was incomplete for him without something to read.
He began writing fiction in junior high, now referred to as middle school, as a means of coping with difficult aspects of his childhood. Although initially a personal outlet, he was fortunate to have teachers who recognized his potential and provided encouragement. Even during that time, he displayed a preference for science and speculative fiction.
Following college, he pursued a career as a newspaper writer and photographer, working for various publications in Virginia, DC, New Mexico, and Ohio over a span of approximately ten years. Throughout his journey, William achieved several state-level awards in both New Mexico and Ohio. He thoroughly enjoyed his role as a journalist, considering it the ideal occupation for someone who relishes meeting people and exploring new subjects.
Now that William Cohen-Kiraly has been writing seriously for a number of years, he has finally discovered his true calling. He harbors a deep passion for his craft and finds immense joy in generating unique and thought-provoking concepts. The prospect of composing formulaic pieces holds no appeal for him; instead, he revels in exploring unconventional ideas that transcend the boundaries of genres.
Already contemplating his next project, tentatively titled “More Songs of a Befuddled Muse,” William is currently immersed in the completion of his genre-bending epic fantasy, “The Hero Without a Prophecy.” He also promises many more stories within the Life and Times of Lady Jane Series, as he has meticulously crafted a universe that accommodates both intriguing and thought-provoking narratives, featuring two beloved characters. As long as his mind and fingers continue to function, William intends to persist in his writing endeavors.
Elizabeth May Brice is an English actress and audiobook narrator. She is known for roles such as the convicted murderer Pat Kerrigan on ITV1‘s Bad Girls, and Agent Johnson in Torchwood: Children of Earth.
