Welcome to the Madhouse: A Medical Space Station Thriller (The Grace Lord Series, Book 1) audiobook cover depicting a human form in space, surrounded by virus-like green cells

Hello again, dear audiobooks, friends!

Last month, I reviewed a fantastic sci-fi audiobook, Bud by the Grace of God, written by family physician, author, visual artist, and self-proclaimed, accident-prone, walking calamity S.E. Sasaki, and, as I promised then, today it’s time for me to check out the first novel in this extremely entertaining series.

Welcome to the Madhouse, A Medical Space Station Thriller, is the first adventure in the Grace Lord Series, and this is my spotlight article in which I will tell you a few things about the story, the award-winning author, and the narrator.

The audiobook version of Welcome to the Madhouse is performed by theater actor, voiceover artist, and audiobook narrator Marc Leclerc. It’s 8 hours and 18 minutes in length, and it’s self-published by the author.

From the Publisher’s Summary we learned that, in space, medicine can be murder!

Grace Lord, combat surgeon in training, has just landed her dream job aboard a medical space station. Attacked by a powerful, gorilla-enhanced combat soldier the moment she steps onto the station, she quickly realizes this assignment will be far from typical. She treats the wounded space marines of the Conglomerate under the watchful eyes of stalking androids who all look alike and a mentor with a serious case of megalomania. Meeting a drop-dead gorgeous psychiatrist almost makes it worth it, until the station docks with a mysterious vessel….

The ship is void of crew. There are only some suspicious-looking oily puddles instead. Then Death comes hammering on the station with a flying fist. Before she knows it, Grace and her companions are on a race against the clock to find a cure for the greatest threat the galaxy has ever known before the medical station is blown out of existence….

Welcome to the Madhouse is a unique medical-sci-fi thriller that will put you on the edge of your seat. If you like sci-fi that combines gripping suspense, laugh-out-loud humor, and unforgettable characters, then you’ll love S. E. Sasaki’s debut novel.

“A layered debut that sings odes to the grandmasters of sci-fi.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“S.E. Sasaki is a hidden treasure, a powerhouse artistic talent who in Madhouse brings us medical science fiction on a personal, engaging level that is addictive to read, sometimes scary, and always fun. Recommended!” (Ed Greenwood, best-selling international creator of The Forgotten Realms)

Sharon is a Japanese Canadian family physician with a B.Sc. in Biology, an M. Sc. in Neurophysiology, and an MD from the University of Toronto, author, visual artist, and accident-prone walking calamity, who is probably safer writing than doing the sports she used to do like ice hockey, cross-country skiing, whitewater kayaking, running, and horseback riding.

When Sharon is not writing, she is assisting in surgery in the operating room, working on emergency and elective procedures.

Sharon was approached by two different Hollywood movie producers about turning the first book in The Grace Lord Series, Welcome to the Madhouse, into a movie but then the Covid virus became a reality and the concept was dropped.

I’ve asked Sharon to tell us more about the inspiration behind the series and of course, about herself. Here is what she said:

“The concept of the medical space station in Welcome to the Madhouse and The Grace Lord Series was born from my experiences in the hospital and operating room. There has never been a dull moment in all my years working as a physician. I wanted to convey the suspense of never knowing what was going to come in the front door and how situations can become dire very fast. I also wanted to share the camaraderie between colleagues that exists in the OR with you. I hope I have achieved that.

When I’m not assisting in surgery or writing the next book, I love to paint and create collages. My collages have won awards at the World Fantasy Convention and Ad Astra. You can see my dragons on my website.

I love to travel, scuba dive, downhill ski, kayak, play tennis, ride horses, and I’ve even ridden an ostrich, once. I have two Maine Coon cats and an Akbash puppy who keep me and my husband hopping, ever since our two children grew up (far too fast).”

Marc Leclerc is an actor living in Los Angeles. He has recorded Welcome to the Madhouse by S.E. Sasaki and has returned to narrate Bud by the Grace of God.

Marc’s most recent theatre credits include Eros in Argonautika, Ghost of Christmas Future in A Christmas Carol, Jose in Man of La Mancha, and Fluellen in Henry V at A Noise Within. At the Loft Ensemble Marc has played Branwell Bronte in Branwell and the Other Brontes, Eric Harris in The Columbine Project, Peter Pan in Now or Neverland, and Ricky in School for Wayward Girls. He is also an award-winning fight choreographer who has most recently coordinated the music video for Are You ready by Disturbed.

I am a huge fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and the amazing Babylon five TV show so you can imagine that I can’t wait to return to this award-winning universe, that I enjoyed so much when I listened to Bud by the Grace of God.

I’ll be sure to return soon with a full review, but until then, take care, stay safe, and don’t forget, always listen with your heart!

We hope that you enjoyed this article and, if you did, that you will share it with your friends on social media.
